Before moving to New York City in 1979, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Phyllis Yvonne Stickney also taught drama at the University of Delaware. She began her acting career in the late 1950s, appearing in films such as Killer of Sheep and The Colour Purple. She also appeared in the television shows The Cosby Show and A Different World. Stickney has published three poetry collections and a memoir, A Piece of My Soul. Phyllis Yvonne Stickney is also a fashion designer, creating outfits for superstars like Oprah Winfrey and Beyoncé.
