2011 he appeared in 16 major league games, going 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA. He struck out 14 hitters while allowing 21 hits and ten walks over 16 innings. He spent most of the season in Triple-A Toledo, where he went 3-5 with a 5.05 ERA in 17 games (10 starts).

After Doug Fister landed on the disabled list with an injured side on April 8, 2012, Villarreal was brought up from Triple-A Toledo. Villarreal appeared in one game for Toledo. Villareal was 3-5 with a 2.63 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and nine holds in 54+23 innings pitched. He was not, however, named to the Tigers’ playoff club that won the American League pennant. In eight bullpen appearances in the minors that year, he posted a 1.29 ERA.

On July 30, 2013, Villarreal and Jake Peavy were dealt to the Boston Red Sox as part of a three-team deal that also sent Avisail Garcia and Francellis Montas to the Chicago White Sox and José Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers. On January 22, 2014, the Red Sox designated him for assignment. Despite throwing only four pitches for the Red Sox in 2013 (a walk-off bases-loaded walk against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park), his lone appearance qualified him for a 2013 World Series ring, which he received at Fenway Park in April 2014. After the 2014 season, he became a free agent.

He has since left professional baseball.

Villarreal’s family home in Venezuela was invaded in March 2013 by three armed thieves who threatened to abduct his relatives. A neighbor notified the police of the odd circumstances. She stated that she was eight months pregnant with his kid. She later pled guilty to illegally accessing a government institution.

Villarreal played for the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves throughout his MLB career. He had several standout seasons, earning recognition for his skills on the mound.
