Jim Gardner was born in New York City and raised in a Reform Jewish family on the Upper East Side. His father was Joseph Goldman, a Mount Sinai Medical Centre professor and the head of the ear, nose, and throat department.

He began working as a writer, desk assistant, and producer for 1010 WINS in New York City in 1970. Jim Gardner started his career as a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972 and immediately succeeded to the post of news director.
