Jim Gardner was born in New York City and raised in a Reform Jewish family on the Upper East Side. His father was Joseph Goldman, a Mount Sinai Medical Centre professor and the head of the ear, nose, and throat department.

Furthermore, he is the step-grandson of renowned Jewish rabbi Mordecai Kaplan from his father. He enrolled at the Fieldston School for Ethical Culture. In 1970 he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Columbia University. As a student, he was a play-by-play announcer for football and basketball, and he covered the 1968 Columbia University demonstrations for the university’s radio station, WKCR-FM.

He began working as a writer, desk assistant, and producer for 1010 WINS in New York City in 1970. Jim Gardner started his career as a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972 and immediately succeeded to the post of news director. He pondered re-enrolling in a Ph.D. program at Brown University while unable to find a job in television. 

Two years later, He started his television broadcasting career at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York. Because of antisemitism in the Buffalo community and the belief that there were too many Jewish names on staff, he adopted the stage name, Gardner.

Jim Gardner worked at Philadelphia’s WPVI from June 1, 1976, until December 21, 2022. He began as a reporter and midday anchor before leading the 5:30 PM news in November 1976.

Since May 11, 1977, he had a single person hosted the 6:00 PM weekday newscasts, replacing Larry Kane; he also solo hosted the 11:00 PM daily newscast between May 11, 1977, and January 11, 2022.

From 1980 until now, he has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention and interviewed every president and major presidential contender since 1976. Gardner has also been to major news events all across the world.

He declared his plan to retire from broadcasting at the end of 2022 on November 10, 2021. Jim Gardner quit his role as Action News anchorman at 11:00 PM on January 11, 2022, and stayed on the 6:00 PM show until his retirement and last broadcast on December 21, 2022.
