Mia Wray was born Mia Isobel Wray-McCann on October 28, 1995, in Sunrise Beach, Noosa, Queensland. Mia Wray began her career performing soul, blues, and folk music before moving to Melbourne. She is Carolyn’s daughter. Mia’s parents received her late grandfather’s piano when she was 11 years old, and they put it into Mia’s bedroom because it was the only room in the home large enough for it. Wray began playing piano at that age and started writing songs in her adolescence. She would later learn to play the guitar by watching YouTube video lessons.

On December 3, 2011, she and Andrew Redford from Maroochydore, Queensland, emerged as joint finalists in the 2011 Telstra Road to Discovery talent development program. The duo competed in the quest’s final on January 24, 2012, during the 40th Tamworth Country Music Festival. Mia Wray was named the Telstra Road to Discovery People’s Choice Award winner on February 13, 2012. Following her People’s Choice Award win, she signed with Mushroom Records.

On May 9, 2020, Mia Wray sang Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” alongside Kate Miller-Heidke, Mahalia Barnes, and Missy Higgins as part of the online music initiative The State of Music. Her debut track, “Work for Me,” premiered on Triple J’s 2020 program with Richard Kingsmill on September 13, 2020. Triple J described “Work for Me” as having “stomping percussion, electrifying brass, and empowering AF songwriting” when it debuted on September 16, 2020, along with a music video.
