Biography

Mia Wray was born Mia Isobel Wray-McCann on October 28, 1995, in Sunrise Beach, Noosa, Queensland. Mia Wray began her career performing soul, blues, and folk music before moving to Melbourne. Her musical style eventually evolved to include pop and bedroom pop genres while retaining soul influences. She supported Vance Joy on his Long Way Home Tour in 2022 and has previously toured with the Rubens and the Teskey Brothers.

Mia Wray signed with Ivy League Records in January 2021 and received a nomination for Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year at the 2021 AIR Awards, Best Solo Artist at the 2021 Music Victoria Awards, and Second in the Performance category at the International Songwriting Competition. Mia Wray and her partner Drew Hammond currently live in Melbourne, Victoria.

Early Life

She is Carolyn’s daughter. Mia’s parents received her late grandfather’s piano when she was 11 years old, and they put it into Mia’s bedroom because it was the only room in the home large enough for it. Wray began playing piano at that age and started writing songs in her adolescence. She would later learn to play the guitar by watching YouTube video lessons. 

Her senior secondary education was completed at St Andrew’s Anglican College in Peregian Springs, Queensland. 

Career

2011–2017: Breakthrough and Mia Wray EP

On December 3, 2011, she and Andrew Redford from Maroochydore, Queensland, emerged as joint finalists in the 2011 Telstra Road to Discovery talent development program. The duo competed in the quest’s final on January 24, 2012, during the 40th Tamworth Country Music Festival. Mia Wray was named the Telstra Road to Discovery People’s Choice Award winner on February 13, 2012. Following her People’s Choice Award win, she signed with Mushroom Records.

Mia Wray’s debut extended play Mia Wray was released on July 2, 2014. Greg Walker produced Mia Wray, recorded over five days in Gippsland, Victoria. The EP’s track “Where I Stand” was featured on the 2018 film Midnight Sun soundtrack. She released her second extended play, “Send Me Your Love,” on April 22, 2016. Furthermore, Brad Jones produced the EP recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. She appeared on Aslove’s single “Put Your Records On” on February 17, 2017.

2020–2021: “Work for Me” and “Never Gonna be the Same.”

On May 9, 2020, Mia Wray sang Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” alongside Kate Miller-Heidke, Mahalia Barnes, and Missy Higgins as part of the online music initiative The State of Music. Her debut track, “Work for Me,” premiered on Triple J’s 2020 program with Richard Kingsmill on September 13, 2020. Triple J described “Work for Me” as having “stomping percussion, electrifying brass, and empowering AF songwriting” when it debuted on September 16, 2020, along with a music video. She also named as one of the acts due to perform on the debut of the second season of the Australian live music program The Sound on October 24, 2020. 

Mia Wray played at the 32nd Isol-Aid event on October 31, 2020, an Instagram live music festival that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. She performed a cappella version of “Work for Me” from Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre for The Sound’s season two debut on November 1, 2020.
