Journey

The journey into YouTube began for the Kaji family in March 2015, prompted by Ryan’s query after watching other toy review channels. He asked his mother why he wasn’t on YouTube like other kids. This question led Loann to leave her job as a high school chemistry teacher to focus full-time on the YouTube channel. Before their YouTube debut, the family adopted the on-screen surname Kaji, replacing their actual last name.

In 2017, Kaji’s parents struck a deal with PocketWatch, a children’s media startup founded in 2016 by Chris Williams and Albie Hecht. PocketWatch manages the marketing and merchandise for Ryan’s YouTube channels. During the Toy Fair 2018 in New York City, Kaji introduced a line of toys under the brand name “Ryan’s World,” developed in collaboration with PocketWatch and Bonkers Toys. These toys made their debut exclusively at Walmart on August 6, 2018.

Controversy
