Loann’s family sought refuge from Vietnam, and she grew up in Houston aspiring to become a teacher, eventually fulfilling that dream. Shion pursued a master’s in engineering at Cornell University but returned to Texas after the birth of Ryan, completing his degree online.
Starting at the age of 3, Ryan’s mother, Loann Kaji, a chemistry teacher, began filming his toy reviews in 2015 and dedicated her time to the venture. Ryan remained committed to his education, despite the success of his channel.

The channel maintains a regular schedule, often releasing a new video daily. One of its notable videos, titled “Huge Eggs Surprise Toys Challenge,” has amassed over 2 billion views as of January 2023, placing it among the top 60 most-viewed videos on YouTube. Ryan’s World boasts a subscriber count of over 34 million and has garnered more than 45 billion views. It stands as one of the Top 10 most-subscribed YouTube channels in the United States.
Characterized as a fusion of personal vlogging and ‘unboxing’ content, the channel combines innocent childhood moments with an intense focus on consumerism, a blend that The Verge has described.

The journey into YouTube began for the Kaji family in March 2015, prompted by Ryan’s query after watching other toy review channels. He asked his mother why he wasn’t on YouTube like other kids. This question led Loann to leave her job as a high school chemistry teacher to focus full-time on the YouTube channel. Before their YouTube debut, the family adopted the on-screen surname Kaji, replacing their actual last name.

In 2017, Kaji’s parents struck a deal with PocketWatch, a children’s media startup founded in 2016 by Chris Williams and Albie Hecht. PocketWatch manages the marketing and merchandise for Ryan’s YouTube channels. Collaborating with PocketWatch and WildWorks in 2018, Ryan ToysReview launched the app “Tag with Ryan,” an endless runner game aimed at children, available on iOS and Android. The partnership also resulted in the production of a 20-episode preschool television series called “Ryan’s Mystery Playdate” in 2019. Additionally, Outright Games released the video game “Race with Ryan” on November 1, 2019, featuring Kaji and characters from the Ryan’s World brand on multiple gaming platforms.

Influence of Ryan’s World

Ryan Kaji’s impact on the toy industry has been substantial, with his high-viewed toy reviews often influencing toy sales. Chris Williams from PocketWatch likened Kaji’s influence to that of Nickelodeon’s beloved character, SpongeBob SquarePants.

During the Toy Fair 2018 in New York City, Kaji introduced a line of toys under the brand name “Ryan’s World,” developed in collaboration with PocketWatch and Bonkers Toys. These toys made their debut exclusively at Walmart on August 6, 2018.

Forbes recognized the Ryan’s World channel as the highest-earning YouTube channel in both 2018 and 2019. According to The New York Times, the Kaji family reportedly earned a minimum of $25 million from the sales of “Ryan’s World” merchandise, which exceeded $250 million in 2021.

Notably, the channel’s description highlights that many of the toys featured in reviews are later donated to charity. Ryan’s mother shared with Tubefilter that “Ryan doesn’t keep all the toys he gets — we give a lot of them away to friends and family, and also a lot of them away to charity.”

However, the channel has faced controversy. On August 28, 2019, a complaint was filed by Truth in Advertising and the Federal Trade Commission regarding insufficient disclosure of sponsored videos. It was highlighted that nearly 90 percent of the Ryan ToysReview videos included paid product recommendations aimed at preschoolers, a demographic unable to discern between commercial content and genuine reviews. Additionally, concerns were raised about the promotion of unhealthy foods in these advertisements. Consequently, this complaint led to the FTC suing YouTube and Google for $170 million. This legal action prompted YouTube to implement new regulations concerning children’s content to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
