After a last-minute cancellation from another volunteer, Kolfage was sent to Iraq to work as an aviation cargo inspector. On September 10, 2004, he suffered injuries in Balad after leaving his hotel when a rocket detonated three feet away. He lost his right hand, a portion of his right forearm, and both legs.
Kolfage received a Purple Heart after surviving injuries. Until July 2005, he was a patient at Walter Reed Medical Center.
He talked publicly about his experience and rehabilitation soon after his injury. He produced a campaign commercial supporting Gabrielle Giffords, a representative. In 2012, he had become invited as Giffords’ special guest to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

In December 2018, Kolfage started a fundraising effort on GoFundMe under the name “We Build the Wall, Inc.” which was reportedly for U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned wall between the United States and Mexico. Using $6-8 million of the donated funding, the organization built a.5-to-1-mile (0.80-1.61 km) “weathered steel” bollard fence close to El Paso on private land next to the U.S.-Mexico border.
In the end, the organization raised $25 million, most of it through internet donations. It stated that We built the wall on privately owned land near the Mexican border in Texas and California.
For allegedly defrauding hundreds of thousands of “We Build the Wall” supporters by utilizing the money earned for personal purposes, Kolfage, Steve Bannon, and two others were charged with federal offenses in August 2020.
